Zhutian Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Nanxiong Basin. Zhang Xianqiu erected the Zhutian member of the Nanxiong Formation in the report on the study of the Dafeng section of Nanxiong compiled in 1981 (unpublished). The section for the designation is in Dafeng of Nanxiong of Guangdong.
Lithology and Thickness
The Zhutian Formation is dominated by brown red siltstone and mudstone, intercalated with thin-bedded gray green marl and light brown siltstone and mudstone. It is 777.1 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Its conformable base marked by a large suite of brown red silty mudstone is distinguished from the Dafeng Fm marked by gray brown thick-bedded sandy conglomerate.
Upper contact
Its conformable top is bounded by the appearance of brown red silty mudstone and clayey siltstone with sandstone at the base of the Zhenshui Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is distributed in the Shaoguan and Huaiji areas of north Guangdong. It is persistent in lithology and does not vary considerably in thickness, for example, 1873.7 m in Lianxian, 770 m in Huaiji, and 781.5 m in Dafeng of Nanxiong.
